Josh walks with the Gait Harness System
Standing and walking are very important for people working through spinal cord injuries (SCI). Exercise is known to reduce risks for many diseases and premature death.
Passive standing is widely used in both acute and chronic SCI care. While a tilt table is often used to initiate a standing regimen, a standing/walking frame is preferred for the long term, and suitable for home use.
Many SCI clients are using the Second Step Gait Harness System in conjunction with KAFO, AFO or other orthotic bracing. Some also use functional electrical stimulation (FES) with bracing and the GHS.
Hospital employee and athlete Josh suffered a paralyzing, incomplete spinal cord injury after diving off a pontoon boat into shallow water. As a result of the accident, Josh broke his C6/C7 vertebrae.
As Josh shares, “But that’s where my faith comes into place, and I have hope that one day I’ll be walking and playing hockey again, and teaching my nephew how to skate. That’s the big bonus of being faithful with God. You have to have faith, hope, and perseverance…and don’t worry about your struggles, because God has control of all of those.”
Josh has been using the Second Step Gait Harness System at one of the Level Eleven Physical Therapy outpatient clinics.
After years of extensive therapy, and still on his journey, on his wedding day Josh was able to use the Gait Harness System to help him walk with assistance down the aisle. Family and friends had not seen him walk for nearly 4 years.
Taking it step by step he walked down to the place he would say his ‘I-Do’s’ with his wife-to-be. The celebration, victory and triumph through tragedy filled this day with joy and gratitude.
Josh shares “The Gait Harness System is probably the best creation and has helped me further my progress. I want to thank you very much for creating the GHS and helping people in need of walking.
“Being able to use GHS at home is amazing because I’m in a lot of pain when I sit around and do nothing. The thing that helps is standing up.
“My faith, hope and perseverance are everything. Faith will get you anywhere and determination will get you to the finish line!”
During physical therapy sessions at the clinic or outdoors, the Second Step Gait Harness System is allowing Josh to practice standing and walking again and get back to real world living.
